Joe Pa Redux

Members of the Penn State Board confirmed today that one of the key reasons for Paterno’s dismissal was the statement he issued earlier that morning telling the trustees they didn’t need to worry their pretty little heads about him anymore. He would resign at the end of the season (see my previous blog on this matter where I speculated that his statement would lead to his dismissal ). More than anything I had ever seen or heard before, this confirmed for me Paterno’s perception of his role at the university. He called the shots and no one else. The Board, in my opinion, deserves the lion’s share of the blame here as they allowed/encouraged this attitude to develop over decades. Ten years ago when the President to the Board to ask for permission to let Joe and the Board refused, the die was cast.
